Large Vessel Handling
The Large Vessel Handling course by the Oceanic Momentum Group aims to equip senior officers with advanced knowledge and maneuvering skills for safely and efficiently handling large vessels under various met-ocean conditions such as wind, waves, and currents. This training covers operations at sea, during port and anchorage approaches, in confined waters, and while transiting narrow canals.
Designed to familiarize and assess the competency of Deck Officers designated to large vessels, this course ensures they are well-prepared for their forthcoming tenures, providing them with the skills and knowledge to handle large vessels in diverse conditions.
Participants will gain confidence in practical ship handling of large vessels in various scenarios and develop a deeper understanding of:
Course Objectives
- ● Behavior of Large Vessels: Understanding the influence of wind, tide, and hydrographic constraints in both deep and shallow waters.
- ● Hydrodynamic Interactions: Overview of hydrodynamic interactions, including shallow water effects, squat, and bank effects.
- ● Maneuvering Techniques: Mastering concepts such as turning circles, stopping distances, crash stops, controlled turns, rudder cycling, anchoring large vessels, and navigating through congested anchorages.
- ● Control in Confined Waters: Maintaining effective control of large vessels when maneuvering in confined waters, including berthing and unberthing, making turns, picking up pilots, and anchoring. Emphasis is placed on using the main engine, rudder, thrusters, and efficient use of tugs.
- ● Accident Analysis and Reporting: Techniques for collecting and analyzing information and reporting accidents effectively.
