Maritime Labour Convention (MLC-2006)
The Maritime Labour Convention (MLC-2006), often referred to as the "Seafarers' Bill of Rights," is an essential international agreement adopted by the International Labour Organization (ILO) to ensure comprehensive protection of the rights and welfare of seafarers worldwide. Entered into force in 2013, MLC-2006 consolidates and updates more than 60 previous maritime labor conventions and recommendations. Employment Agreements
● Seafarers must have a written employment agreement that is clear, legally enforceable, and consistent with the MLC standards.
● Agreements must detail wages, paid annual leave, repatriation rights, and contract termination conditions.
Wages and Payment
● Seafarers must be paid at least monthly, with clear information on wage calculations and timely receipt of their wages.

● Accommodation: Ships must provide decent living conditions, including adequate sleeping rooms, sanitary facilities, and ventilation.
● Recreational Facilities: Ships must offer recreational facilities, amenities, and services appropriate for seafarers' welfare.
● Food and Catering: Seafarers are entitled to nutritious and varied meals prepared in hygienic conditions.
- 4. Health Protection, Medical Care, Welfare, and Social Security
● Medical Care: Seafarers must have access to prompt and adequate medical care, including dental care, both on board and ashore.
● Health and Safety: Ships must maintain a safe and hygienic working environment, and provide occupational health and safety training.
● Welfare: Seafarers must have access to welfare facilities and services in ports.
● Social Security: Seafarers are entitled to social security protection, including sickness, injury, and pension benefits.

● Flag State Responsibilities: Countries must ensure that ships flying their flag comply with MLC-2006 standards through inspections and certification.
● Port State Control: Ships entering a port of a ratifying country may be inspected to ensure compliance with MLC standards.
● Complaints Procedures: Seafarers must have access to fair and effective onboard and onshore complaint procedures.
